CAMILLA WORDIE
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Camilla Wordie, born in London and now living in Somerset, is an artist and art director. Inspired by routine and daily life, she uses everyday objects in playful yet minimal compositions to tell stories, with balance being a recurring theme throughout her work. For Camilla, food is therefore deployed not as an ingredient but as a material, to be used unexpectedly. Her work encourages the viewer to look a little closer, to feel uncomfortable and to question what they see.
EAT TO LIVE OR LIVE TO EAT
Eat to Live or Live to Eat presents 10 people, with 10 photographers, showcasing 10 ingredients. The idea of portraiture through food had been brewing with artist Camilla Wordie for many years, having always found humour, joy and intimacy in learning about other's food habits, whether they be close friends or strangers. This is because Food defines us. Are we fussy or adventurous eaters? Do we make time for lunch or have it on the go? What would we have for our last meal?
Each portrait is based on an interview with a subject, where they committed to just 10 ingredients they couldn't live without and told stories of their food memories. These nuggets of information come together in Camilla's detailed compositions to describe an essential part of each person's life, and hence each person. Camilla hopes these portraits encourage you to find joy in the simple pleasure of food and the easy conversations it creates. She invites you to try new things, dig out an old recipe, post an ingredient to a friend, call up your grandmother, argue why pickled walnuts are essential or buy a pack of Quavers when next filling up your tank.
