MAKO SATO

Sato was born in Okinawa, Japan in 1978, graduating from the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts, Department of Ceramics in 2001. She studied German and travelled throughout Europe before opening a shop back in Okinawa in 2012 called Bonoho, which specialised in tableware and coffee. Bonoho is her husband Naomichi Sato’s trading name, as he too is an established Japanese ceramicist. It was also the name of a café they ran from their home until the birth of their first child.

Makoto spent many hours helping her husband with his pottery work, before trying her hand at her own designs. The results are exceptional small vessels that reflect a tenderness towards nature, and the materials with which expresses her creativity.
