Turned vessel from locally sourced handkerchief tree, with hand carved texture
27 × 25 cm
Bleach, iron, dye finish
‘This piece is made from a very old and beautiful handkerchief tree from the University of Cambridge gardens, that unfortunately had to be felled in 2023 due to structural deterioration at the base.
A generously proportioned, open form defined by a softly flowing profile. The lower body is shaped with a sequence of hand-cut facets that wrap around the surface, building a rhythmic landscape of depth, movement and tactile interest.
A moody iron-rich finish drifts across the surface in layers of earthy browns, burnt orange, ash grey and inky black. Beneath this evolving patina, the wood’s natural character - knots, grain and subtle irregularities - quietly reveals itself through washes of oxide, dye and selectively lightened areas.’
