The painter has produced several versions of the subject of the painter-cook throughout his career and this is perhaps the first one. It is typical of his early work which is diminutive and tentative although it is also mysterious as is the subject of the painter-cook. The painter-cook is cook, painter and pharaoh, the ruler of a great house. His hat provides stature at a visible level. Perhaps that is what gives this work such a feeling of ancient authority.
The painting expresses a wonderful and profound example of painterly process in which the painter searches within the dark air of the background to find forms which emerge from an intuitive technique in which scraping, daubing and restating reveal it’s forms and what emerges seems like something from the subconscious or the depth of an unfathomable pool of water.
