The painter had clear narratives when conceiving this painting and yet when questioned refused to divulge them. He mentioned Toulouse-Lautrec as a possible influence and he discussed the role short men like Napoleon might play in their unrelenting need for conquest, but he did not divulge the actual inspiration that had lead him to this image but hinted that he had real people in mind. One can conclude that chefs tend towards excellence and are often excessive in their passions. What this little man hopes to be king over is unclear, but he is certainly vulnerable in his smallness of stature.
