1991

oil on wood panel

22 × 18 cm

The artist spent some of his childhood in Mexico where he developed a long term empathy for Hispanic and Latin culture which never left him and contributed to his later desire to move to Italy.

This painting is one of half of a work which he cut into two as he felt disappointed with it. This side of the panel shows a man strutting forward about to engage in dance. The artist had recently seen a fiery concert of flamenco dancing and he wished to portray it. The tentative and awkward handling of the image is typical of his early work in which he had little confidence and no real idea of where he was going, however it is full of authentic response and quite lyrical. The artist had renounced ten years of architectural studies and employment as an architect feeling he had been shoved into a world of corporate posturing which had no heart or soul and was determined to find a vehicle for his feelings through painting.
