The artist moved to Italy to emulate the tradition of landscape painting the European continentals did so well. This painting celebrates the small town the artist adopted as a home which though not of great size dominates the upper Tiber valley.
The painting has been reworked on several occasions with subtle alterations resulting in a tight and geometrically magnetic arrangement. It is in this reworking and the reliance on memory and reconstruction to do so, that the great mystery of this work lies. It is a deceptively understated piece of which there is little comparison.
