After the artist moved to Umbria he found a small drawing group which worked from an English model. He did a number of small oil sketches on wooden panels of which this is one. What he particularly appreciated was the short time in which he was given to execute a painting (twenty minutes) which forced him to respond spontaneously and forced him to make broad simplified forms.
