Painter of the Brown Chocolate Cake
2022
oil on canvas
‘This is the most substantial version following the theme of the cook as painter. Here one cook supports a large three tiered chocolate cake while another paints it. Many questions are raised including whether a cook should paint. There is a darkness to the painting suggesting both menace and mystery. The glorification of a chocolate cake seems almost absurd in this context. The heavy impasto of the paint recalls ancient art and the overall feeling is forbidding though the subject is light hearted. This painting may in fact be in a round about kind of way a homage to the Italian still life painter Giorgio Morandi who elevated simple still life objects to express significant meaning. The chocolate cake is as such a still life object and the painting itself suggests a world of implicit drama and depth.’
