The backside view of this illustrious bridge has fascinated the artist since he first discovered it. Like the society of Georgian Bath, full of grandeur and pretence but also with a steamier more squalid side, Pulteney Bridge has a more dilapidated side in which natural inclination acts itself out.
The bridge also recalls Roman bridges and the Ponte Vecchio in Florence. It is an icon and the artist painted it on several occasions partly to pay homage to Richard Walter Sickert and partly to rival him. As a bridge it has almost no rivals.
