1991
oil on wood board
32.8 x 46 cm
This painting is fairly unique in the artist’s production and was painted very early on in his career. Having arrived in the small bastide town of Eymet in the Dordogne, France, and been involved in the conversion of a townhouse the artist managed to fit in a bit of painting.
Utilising a technique called ‘tonking’ which derived from professor Tonks who taught at the Slade, Rose transforms the local grapes and figs of the region into a soft but magnetic image in which his strong and architectural geometric capacity remains mysteriously hidden in the overall organic rhythms of the painting.
