This is an early work and was painted in California while the artist was teaching a course in landscape painting. It remains a rare painting in the artist’s output as it expresses a unique moment when he was staying in a friend’s studio and had the opportunity to observe a mysterious friend at his easel, painting, and who subsequently disappeared and is believed to be working in obscurity somewhere on the west coast of California. The work is a true classic, evoking painters as diverse as Daumier, Corot and Tiepolo and even Philip Guston. It is small work which despite it’s size reverberates and echoes in eternity.
