oil on wood panel

framed size 54 x 46 cm

This image is one of the most impenetrable painting produced by the artist. At first glance there seems to be no identity to the circumstance and figures it portrays. What on earth is occurring? This painting is beyond context and time. The mind is dumbfounded and must interpret and question to get anywhere at all.

Some clues are available to initiate an understanding of this painting, the two figures at the far right are an adaptation of Massacio’s Expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, and this suggests a biblical context. The other significant aspect is the presence of a cook who appears to be walking a swan

On the left side of the painting a couple dances, but the embrace appears coercive. In the centre, the foreground figure is a woman in crimson stockings, holding a hand mirror and next to her, in the near distance a jester-like figure reaches tragically towards the picture frame.

This is an alarming painting to contemplate and become lost in, with no obvious narrative or symbolic resolution to comfort one. Like aspects of life and spiritual inquiry, answers remain impenetrable.
